History
The SoAn Department was founded in 1969. Its thrust started out as pure cultural anthropology under Fr. Rudolf Rahmann, and general social science under Fr. Brandewie. When Fr. Wilhelm Flieger took over, the department concentrated more on demographic researches.

Social awareness and involvement in activism started in the late 70s and 80s amidst the economic and political turmoil in the country. The department, during this time, was headed by Prof. Zenaida Uy.

The SoAn Dept. since then, has established a healthy balance between academic responsibility and social activism.
